How to Measure Your Small Dog for Clothes (Simple 3-Step Guide)
Share
Getting the right size is the difference between an outfit your dog loves and one they wriggle out of. The good news: measuring your dog at home takes about two minutes, and you only need three numbers. Here is how to do it, step by step.
What you need
A soft measuring tape works best, the kind used for sewing. Do not have one? Use a piece of string. Wrap or lay the string along your dog, mark it, then hold it against a ruler.
It also helps to measure when your dog is calm and standing on all four legs. A treat and a helping hand make it easier.
The 3 measurements
1. Neck
Measure around the base of the neck, where a collar naturally sits. Keep the tape snug, not tight. You should be able to slip two fingers underneath. This tells you how the neck opening will fit.
2. Chest (the most important one)
Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. This is usually the biggest measurement, and it is the one that matters most for clothing. If a piece fits the chest, it will almost always go on comfortably. Again, keep it snug with room for two fingers.
3. Back length
Measure along the top of the back, from the base of the neck (between the shoulder blades, where a collar sits) to the base of the tail. Do not include the tail. This tells you how long the clothing will be on your dog.
The two-finger rule
Whenever you measure the neck or chest, make sure two fingers fit between the tape and your dog. This keeps the fit comfortable, not squeezing. Clothing that is too tight can rub or limit movement, and clothing that is too loose can slip or trip them up.
How to use your numbers
Every product page at Arlo's Closet has its own size chart. Compare your three measurements to that chart and pick the size that fits all three, with the chest being the priority.
One important note: sizing is not the same across every style, because our pieces come from different makers. Your dog might wear one size in a sweater and another in a coat. Always check the chart on the item you are buying rather than guessing from a previous order.
What if my dog is between sizes?
When your dog falls between two sizes, it is usually safest to size up. Choose the larger size if your dog has a thick or fluffy coat, sits near the top of a size range, or if you prefer a relaxed, easy fit. A little extra room is more comfortable than a piece that is too snug.
Quick recap
- Neck — around the base, where a collar sits.
- Chest — the widest part, just behind the front legs. Most important.
- Back length — base of the neck to the base of the tail.
- Keep it snug with room for two fingers, and size up when in doubt.
That is all it takes. Measure once, write the numbers down, and you will be ready to shop with confidence.
